3. WATER

These questions relate to water collection use, re-use and water waste in your home. Rainfall patterns have changed dramatically in Australia over the past decade. Every time it rains uncollected water runs off roofs and roads and goes to ‘stormwater’. Is rain a problem or a useful resource?
  • Water collection Questions:

    • inputQ1. HOW MUCH DO I NEED EACH DAY?

I'm really interested to see if we can live independent from mains water. How big of a tank would I need to make sure I would only rarely need to pay for my water?

    • thumb_upQ2. WATER QUALITY

Having a water tank and collecting roof water is a no brainer. But I'm concerned about the quality of the water after it has come off the roof. Would tank water be safe to drink?

    • error_outlineQ3. RUNNING OUT

How do I get the most out of my water tank by making it last until the next rainy day?

  • Water use Questions:

    • assessmentQ4. RATINGS

I can see most taps and showerheads now have the numbers of litres per minute written there. What else is there to being water-wise?

    • languageQ5. GARDEN

I guess it's simplest just to use the roof water on my garden. Do I have to purify before I put it on my garden?

    • verified_userQ6. TANKS A LOT

Water tanks take up so much space and to be honest I'm not sure they look the best. What options do I have for integrating them into a really good looking garden?

  • Water re-use Questions:

    • restoreQ7. DISCONNECT

If I go to all the trouble of having rainwater used inside my building maybe I should think about disconnecting from Sydney Water’s supply as well. What do you think about living off the water grid?

    • replayQ8. USING WATER TWICE

Somebody told me something about ‘grey water’. What is grey water?

    • invert_colorsQ9. WASH WASH WASH

I’m not happy about drinking rainwater without purifying it. Is there anyway of re-using water for our washing machine and toilet flushing?

  • Waste water Questions:

    • loopQ10. NUMBER TWO

I know that toilets use a lot of water and usually it's really good quality drinking water too. Are there any waterless toilets and are they practical for my family living in a city?
